Alison Carter

Psychologist (BA(Psych), PGDipPsych)

I started my career in helping others over 20 years ago as a disability support worker. I have worked and studied my whole career to increase my skills, reflect on my style and provide the best quality care I can to anyone who is seeking support and treatment. I pride myself in being able to connect with diverse personalities and presentations and I focus on this connection before any intervention or treatment begins. Unless there is a sense of safety and security in the therapeutic relationship then progress is going to be limited.

I have a range of skills from the many walks of life I have experienced. Working with children has been a highlight for me as my inner child is close to the surface. But it is equally important to work with adults and young people so that I can utilise all my skills I have developed over the years. I have worked with young people, adults, families, and couples. I enjoy the variation and hope to focus more and more on mood disorders such as anxiety and depression as well as trauma-based difficulties people have experienced.

I therapeutically ‘grew up’ in a family systems framework which means I will often notice connections and important patterns in relationships and the choices we make that may be affecting the client’s current difficulty. Attachment theory has always been another solid ‘base’ to my work and I find goes hand-in-hand to the trauma informed care and practice model that I always use with clients. Acceptance and Commitment therapy took up a lot of my focus for many years as I found it incredibly helpful to manage my own ups and downs of life. I have branched out to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and more recently Schema Therapy. All of these different therapeutic styles mean that at any point in session I can utilise strategies, metaphors and develop my understanding of a client’s situation more effectively.

I am thrilled to offer telehealth therapy with PsychHelp and hope to work with you soon.
