Dr Carmen Teodor

Clinical Psychologist (BA, MA, PhD Psychology)

I am an empathetic, compassionate, and solution-oriented bilingual Clinical Psychologist (English and Romanian), dedicated to providing evidence-based, and culturally sensitive psychological interventions to individuals, couples and families, with almost 20 years of clinical experience (since 2011 in Australia) with diverse client populations in one-on-one and group settings. In Australia, I have worked with an NGO as a clinical supervisor and manager of a therapeutic team providing counselling and family dispute resolution services, and as a registered psychologist in private psychology clinic.

I have an innate ability to establish rapport quickly, build trust, and relate to individuals on all levels. I find the uniqueness of ones’ story highly motivating and meaningful, giving me purpose in finding efficient ways to tailor treatment plans therapeutic interventions that would support clients’ needs, help them diffuse stressful situations, proactively resolve issues, and achieve challenging goals.

Coming to therapy can be quite daunting and anxiety provoking for some clients. Having to talk to a stranger and share your deepest worries, fears and hopes, might feel scary but I strongly believe that these profound acts of courage (showing up and being vulnerable) are a sign of undeniable strength and could lead to one of the most uplifting experiences you have ever had. I truly believe that the bravest thing that one could say is “help”. Rest assured that therapy is a safe and confidential space where I will be gently walking by your side on this magnificent journey of self-discovery. I am committed to reflective practice and continuous self-improvement, and that is why I value feedback provided at the end of each session that would help my find the best way possible to support you.

I am using integrative, trauma informed, evidence-based psychotherapy approaches: from therapies focussed on symptom reduction such as the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to insight-focused psychotherapies such as systemic, experiential and narrative psychotherapy.

I have a special interest in working with couples using therapy models such as Imago Relationship therapy, a form of relationship and couples therapy that focuses on transforming any conflict between couples into opportunities for healing and growth. The Latin word “imago”—meaning “image”—refers to the “unconscious image of familiar love.” What we find is that there is frequently a connection between frustrations in adult relationships and early childhood experiences. Through Imago Relationship Therapy, couples can learn to understand each other’s feelings and “childhood wounds” more empathically, allowing them to heal themselves and their relationships so they can move toward a more “Conscious Relationship.” Learning and teaching the “Imago Dialogue” allows couples to move from blame and reactivity, to understanding and empathy, so they can create a deeper and loving connection with each other.

I use a systemic framework that aims to assist families and complex human systems mobilise their own strengths and relationships to make distressing symptoms less problematic, helping members of the family see each other’s perspectives, heal rifts, and have those difficult and intimate conversations which they could not have at home without tension and conflict.

Psychoeducation is not a type of therapy but rather a specific form of education. Psychoeducation involves the provision and explanation of information to clients about what is widely known about characteristics of their symptoms, issues and implications of the problem.
