“I’m 20 years old and I think I have depression. I had it before 3 years ago and I beat it. Can I beat it again?  I think what triggered my depression is a stressful life event.  How can I make the recovery faster?” Louis

Thank you for your question Louis.  Some people find it helpful to think about mental health conditions such as depression like an old sports injury.  With a sports injury you need to be careful of that area but also build up muscle and flexibility in the same area so that it is stronger.  When you have experienced mental illness, you will need to be more careful of any triggers, but you also need to build skills which you can use in the future.

The exciting part of your question is that you have beat it before which means you have some skills already.  I would definitely say processing and talking about the stressful life event you have experienced is a very important part of therapy.

I would also ensure that when you finish therapy you work on a relapse prevention plan. This will support you after therapy to manage your mental health and provide you with ideas as to how you can recover if you do become depressed again.
